Lab Exercise 5A QUESTION:s Describe and explain the relationship between the amount of oxygen con sumed and time. If you increased the temperature of the water bath what would you predict would happen to the cricket and seed respiration? 2. 3. What is the purpose of KOH in this experiment? 4. Why did the vial have to be completely sealed around the stopper? 5. Explain why water moved into the respirometer pipettes. 6. Where does the seed obtain fuel to perform cellular respiration? 7. Do we need to consider photosynthesis as a facto when interpreting the data from the peas? Explain.Explanation / Answer
1. As the time increases, the amount of oxygen also increases.
2. Germinating peas (seed) and the crickets will consume more oxygen.
3. KOH pellets absorb carbon dioxide and form an insoluble precipitate so that it's in removal of carbon dioxide which inturn should not affect the result.
4. The stopper at the top of the vial had to be completely sealed so that no gas could leak out of the vial and so that no water would be able to enter into the vial.
5. While the seeds undergo cellular respiration, they consumed oxygen and release carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide reactes with the KOH resulting in a decrease in the volume of gas in the pipette and the vial. Because the pipette tip was exposed to the water bath, water moved into the pipette.
