Question

Jane is invited four times a year to promote her “How to Save the Planet from Greenhouse Gases” book by her publisher. She flies business class to New York, London, Beijing and Sao Paolo from Grand Forks International airport (GFK). Jack flies twice a year from Seattle to Okinawa (SEA to OKA) to visit his brother in the Marine Corps, flying first class every time.

i) Which of these two activities emits more CO2 to the atmosphere?

ii) If Jane could use Skype to connect with her audiences twice a year, how much reduction in CO2 emissions would she achieve? With a view to minimizing emissions, which trips would you recommend that she replace with Skype interviews?

iii) How much would Jack reduce his CO2 emissions if he flew business class, instead of first class on his foreign travel?

Explanation / Answer

1. first activity emits more Co2 to atmosphere since longer disteance is covered in first trip hence more fuel consumption. hence more co2 emission

2.If she could use there would be a 100 percent reduvtion in emission. She could use skype on the tour which is the longest ie Gfk to beijing.

3. class travelling has nothing to do with emission of co2.
