The river is flowing with 5 feet/sec current and direction of -40 degrees. How fast and in what direction should she swim so that she ends up at the campsite in 40 seconds? Ann is standing on the edge of a river bank. There is a campsite 320 feet away from her on the opposite side of the river at a direction of 25 degrees. The river is flowing with 5 feet/sec current and direction of -40 degrees. How fast and in what direction should she swim so that she ends up at the campsite in 40 seconds?

Explanation / Answer

camp site is 320 feet away from the opposite side of the river at 25 degrees

and speed of current is 5 feet/ sec , -40 degrees

let speed of Ann is x feet / sec

since current is in opposite direction

Ann's speed against current = speed of Ann - speed of current

Ann's speed against current = x - 5

now we can write the equation

x - 5 = 320 / 40

x - 5 = 8

x = 13 feet/ sec

hence, Ann's speed should be 13 feet / second
