Question
The most common water pollutants are organic. Since most materials are broken down by bacteria that require oxygen, an excess of organic mater may result in depletion of available oxygen. In turn this can be harmful to other organisms living in the water. The demand for oxygen by the bacteria is called the biological oxygen demand (BOD). A study of streams located near an industrial complex revealed that 35% have high BOD, 10% show high acidity, and 40% of streams with high acidity have a high BOD. What is the probability that a randomly selected stream will have both characteristics?
Explanation / Answer
P(BOD)=0.35
P(Acidity)=0.1
P(BOD Acidity)=0.4
--> P(Acidity and BOD)/P(Acidity)=0.4
--> P(Acidity and BOD)/0.1=0.4
--> P(Acidity and BOD) =0.4*0.1=0.04
So the probability is P(Acidity and BOD) =0.4*0.1=0.04
