Question

Solve the problem. The table show the number of smokers in a random sample of 500 adults aged 20-24 number of smokers in a random sample of 450 adults aged 25-29. Assume that you plan to use a significant of alpha = 0.10 to test the claim that P1~P2. Find the critical value(s) for this hypothesis test. Do the data sufficient evidence that the proportion of smokers in the 20-24 age group is different from the proportion of in the 25-29 age group? z = plusminus 1.645; yes z = plusminus 1.28; yes z = plusminus 1.96; no z = 1.28; no

Explanation / Answer

To test the claim, perform 2-proportion hypothesis test using Minitab.

Step1. Go to Stat> Basic statistics> 2-proportion.

Step2. In 2-sample proprtion, select 'Summarized data' and enter 110 ad 63 in 'Number of events' for two samples and 500 and 450 for 'Number of trials'. Click OK.

Z=3.24. Reject null hypothesis as p value is too small.
