QUESTION 5 Which of the processes will be inhibited by glucagon? Glycogen breakdown B-oxidation O Gluconeogenesis O Glycolysis QUESTION 6 Which of the following amino acids cannot be directly converted to pyruvate? O Glycine O Alanine Tryptophan O Lysine QUESTION 7 Which of the following amino acids is purely ketogenic i.e. cannot be converted to glucose? O Tyrosine O Leucine O Isoleucine Glutamate QUESTION 8 Which of the following pathways are upregulated by AMPK? Glycogen synthesis Fatty acid synthesis O Protein synthesis O GlycolysisExplanation / Answer
5) Glycolysis will be inhibited by glucagon because glucagon converts stored glycogen into glucose whereas glycolysis refers to breakdown of glucose by enzymes releasing energy and pyruvate.
6) Lysine since it can not be synthesized by human body so it is essential in humans and must be obtained from diet. Catabolism of lysine takes place through one of several pathways, most common is saccharopine pathway which takes place in liver. The product formed is acetyl-CoA which is converted to pyruvate through ketogenic pathway.
7)Leucine is purely ketogenic amino acid. It's breakdown produces acetyl CoA and acetoacetate which is done by ketogenic amino acids wheresas glucogenic amino acids are converted to glucose. Leucine breakdown primarily occurs in muscles. Leucine helps to produce energy in muscles and promotes protein synthesis.
8) AMPK stimulates glucolysis by activating phosphorylation of 6-phospho-fructo-2-kinase and activating phosphorylation of glycogen phosphorylase .
