Question
Solve the following problem providing clear explanations for each step of your work.
Jose has a fish tank that measures 11.8 inches wide, 19.7 inches long, and 15.7 inches deep. He empties it halfway to clean it. To refill it when he is done, he will fill a one-gallon jug in the sink and carry it to the tank, pour it in, and then turn to the sink again.
1. Convert the dimensions of the tank to centimeters. Round all measurements to the nearest whole centimeter.
2. How many liters does Jose need to add to the tank to fill it?
3. How many times will Jose need to carry the jug from the sink to the tank?
Please be sure to justify every step in your solution and label all numbers with the units they represent.
Thank you.
Explanation / Answer
a) 11.8 inches = 11.8*2.54 =29.972 = 30 cm
19.7 inches = 19.7*2.54 = 50.038 = 50 cm
15.7inches = 15.7*2.54 = 39.878 = 40 cm
b) tank is half filled , so litres of water required = (1/2)(l*b*h) =(1/2)(30*50*40)
= 30000 cm^3
c) capacity of 1 jug = 1 gallon = 3785.41cm^3
No of jugs required to fill the tank = 30000/capacity of jug = 30000/3785.41 = 7.925 jugs = 8 jugs
