3. Let the investment made by Khalid be $ x. Then the interest on $ x for 1 year at 4 % is 0.04x. Since Khalid gets $ 1560 after 1 year, hence x + 0.04x = 1560 or, 1.04x = 1560, so that x = 1560/1.04 = 1500. Thus, the amount originally invested was $ 1500.

4. Angelo’s Kayak travels at 14 km/hr in still water. The speed of the current is 2km/hr . Since Angelo is travelling downstream, the speed at which his kayak travels changes to 14 +2 = 16km/hr. Therefore, the distance of 20 km downstream will be covered in 20/14 = 10/7 = 1.428571429 hr i.e. 1.43 hr ( on rounding off to 2 decimal places)or, 1 hr, 25minutes43 sec (approximately).

5. Let the amounts of Dimitri’s student loans at 5 % and 6 % be $ x and $ y respectively. Then x + y = 9000…(1). Also 5x +6y = x * 5/100 + y * 6/100 = 492 or, 5x +6y =49200…(2). On multiplying the 1st equation by 5, we get 5x+5y = 45000…(3). Now, on subtracting the 3rd equation from the 2nd equation, we get 5x +6y -5x-5y = 49200-45000 or, y = 4200. Then, on substituting this value of y in the 1st equation, we get x +4200 = 9000 so that x = 9000-4200 = 4800. Thus, the amounts of Dimitri’s student loans at 5 % and 6 % are $ 4800 and $ 4200 respectively.
