Question
You bought a meal plan at the beginning of the semester for $210. Each meal costs $4 .25. Your balance (in dollars) depends on the number of meals you purchased. Suppose the above information was not given and you were only given the graph below. Determine what information should be added to the graph to understand what the graph represents then add this information below. in other words, add all characteristics found in a good graph. Pick one of the points from the above graph. Circle the point and label it with its ordered pair. Provide the practical meaning for the point you circled.Explanation / Answer
a. The graph is that of a line with a negative slope. The point, where the line meets the Y-Axis appears to be (0,210).This means that the y-intercept is 210.Further, the point (20,125) apparently lies on the graph of the line. Thus, if the equation of the line is y = mx+c, where c is the y-intercept and m is the slope, then c = 210 so that the equation becomes y = mx +210. Now, on substituting x = 20 and y = 125 in this equation , we get 125 = 20m+210 so that m = (-210+125)/20 = -85/20 = -4.25. Thus, the equation of the line is y = -4.25x +210.
The graph is not labelled. The label should be “Meal-Plan”. Also, the X-Axis and the Y-Axis should describe the data mentioned thereat. The data label on the Y-Axis should be “Balance available in the Meal- Plan” and the data label on the X-Axis should read “ Number of Meals Purchased”. The slope represents the deduction of the price of a meal from the initial price of the meal-plan. Then the graph would make sense.
b. The only point on the graph which can be picked up accurately is the one which is 4th from the top and 2nd from the bottom. This point is ( 20,125).
c. The practical meaning of the point (20,125) is that the balance available in the nmeal-plan after purchasing 20 meals is $125.
Note:
We cannot see the original graph. Hence the choice of words “appears to be”
