1. How relevant are statistics to data mining? Data mining is the science of extracting previously indiscernible, relevant patterns from information. Of the many tools utilized by data mining, statistics is one of the most influential. Statistics supports data mining by providing the formulas necessary to establish associations between data and to assign probabilities to outcomes. This facilitates individuals and companies to make more informed decisions. Statistical methods also provide the data visualizations. This allows individuals who may not be adept at understanding numerical concepts to swiftly understand their importance. A popular model of data visualization is the word cloud or tag cloud. It displays the frequency of metadata by the size of the word. For example, a word cloud for items at a grocery store would display "milk" more prominently than a lesser purchased item 2. Can we avoid misleading with number? Alan Smith demonstrated that individuals mislead with numbers when it is based upon their perceptions of reality. For example, when individuals were surveyed about different demographics of their nation their answers were significantly different than reality. This was true even when the information was localized. These individuals did not even intend to misunderstand reality, but they did. This is inherent to our human nature. To avoid misleading with numbers they need to be based upon the appropriate, unbiased statistical methods. In First statement it is right that Statistics is crucial in data mining and is influential in this emerging area. In fact many tools such as predictive modeling, cluster analysis, factor analysis, PCA, regression analysis, Simulation, Stochastic are the areas that have lot of applications in Data mining. In fact data mining is now not restricted to data in numeric form but every kind of data (image, audio, video, pictures,text, etc have to be analyzed and statistics helps there.
In Second statement agin it is right that individuals misleds with numbers. In fact analyzing is simple as there many softwares but interpreting the results and ouptut is a challenge.
