Question
do you agree or disagree from this statement and from Alan Smith video " why you should love statistics" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogeGJS0GEF4
.How relevant are statistics to data mining? From our first lesson, we learned that Data Mining is the process of extracting information from data and it involves the analysis of data from different perspectives, summarizing and categorizing it to increase its usefulness. Statistics on the other hand, is a study of how to collect, organizes, analyze, and interpret numerical information from data. Based on the above definitions, it is clear that statistics is a core component in the process of data mining. Statistics helps to identify previously unknown patterns and relationships and that leads to identification of random noise and significant findings which helps to predict probability of certain outcomes. .Can we avoid misleading with number? As the speaker mentioned, individual experiences and the media can influence people's perception of issues, and that could lead to a certain level of bias towards an issue. However, I believe we can avoid misleading with numbers if we follow appropriate procedures and focus on finding the truth from data. For example, if a question is asked in a survey in a biased manner just to prove a point rather than finding the truth, the data collected from that survey will obviously be skewed and that survey will produce numbers that are misleading about the subject matter. To avoid providing misleading information to the public about issues, data should be collected in the fair manner and from the right sources and processed unbiasedly. In addition, we can avoid producing misleading results by including data outliers in our analysis so that we do not only capture data points that that are of interest to us or reinforce a particular theory My question, however, is how easy is it to identify misleading statistical information or numbers?Explanation / Answer
Actually, it is not easy to find misleading statistical data. Data presenter can present it in such a manner which gives false results but without glorifying the biased values.
True data in statistics is of utmost importamce as it forms the basis of decisions.
You should love statistics, only then you will show interest in the facts and figure. Updating ourselves can prevent trusting misleading with numbers.
