Question
A recent study showed that during each 4-hour period of the day, the iconic “Fiestas de la Calle de San Sebastián” in Old San Juan, needed at least the following number of policemen (all days had the same requirements):
Period / Minimum Demand
12:00am-04:00am / 38
04:00am-08:00am / 32
08:00am-12:00pm / 22
12:00pm-04:00pm / 24
04:00pm-08:00pm / 26
08:00pm-12:00pm / 34
a) What should have been the optimal number of policemen and schedule for patrolling the street?
b) If thirty-two policemen were schedule to work during each period, what can be say about the efficiency of that schedule?
Explanation / Answer
Given time schedule and Demand is as follows.
Period / Minimum Demand
12:00am-04:00am / 38
04:00am-08:00am / 32
08:00am-12:00pm / 22
12:00pm-04:00pm / 24
04:00pm-08:00pm / 26
08:00pm-12:00pm / 34
First of all to determine otptimal requirement need some more information such as
Maximum number of policeman available
Cost associated with each policeman
Maximum budget available for patroling
Estimated Distribution Parameters : Policeman
Normal Distribution Location (Mean) = 29.33 , Scale (Variance) = 6.282
Since the data follows mormal distribution, we can say that optimal requirement is 29.33 means 30 policeman.
If 34 are appointed then definitely their efficiency is far better.
