Does it follow from this information that 66.9% (the sum of 36.5% and 30.4%) of American households have a pet dog or a pet cat? Explain/justify your answer. 4. Based on the information given, what is the smallest possible value for the percentage of American households that have a pet dog or a pet cat? 5, Describe the circumstance in which this smallest possible value (from #4) would be attained.

Explanation / Answer

Answer to this question below. Please write back in case you have questions:

P(pet dog) = .365

P(pet cat) = .304

3. No. There might be people who might own both, i.e. P(pet dog and pet cat) != 0

So, it doesn't follow that 66.9% of American households have a pet dog or cat

4. The smallest possible value of %age of American households that have a pet dog or a pet cat is

max ( 36.5%, 30.4%) = 36.5% or .365.

5. In this case pet cat is a subset of pet dog. Few owners of pet dog don't have pet cat, which is 36.5%-30.4% = 6.1%
