Question

Pretend that you are at a small ollege where only two professors teach elementary statistics. The distribuion of final grades in Professor A's classes are normally distributed with mean = 80 and standard deviation = 5, and the distribution of final grades for Professor B is normally distributed with mean = 80 and standard deviation = 10.

a). say you are a student who is very nervous about possibly failing the class. So, you want to choose the professor who gives out less F's. whom would you choose? Justify your answer.

b). Say you are a student who desperately wants an A which would lead you to desire the professor who gives out more A's. Whom would you choose? Justify your Answer

Explanation / Answer

a)As mean is same for both of the  Professor ; therefore

here we would like to choose a teacher whose deviation from mean should be less cause than we will have small devaition from mean to lower side and less F's. therefore one must choose  Professor A's classes having less standard deviation in comparison to  Professor B.

b)

for getting an A one;s score is far above from mean and that is more favourable when standard deviation is high and therefore higher probability of getting an A in comparison to a class of lower standard deviation

therefore one must choose  Professor B class if wants to have higher chance of having A's.
