Question

Do you agree from this statement below? why? Although feelings and emotions cannot be classified the same way we classify store grocery items, there is definitely a possibility to classify feelings and emotions relating to specific events. For example, if we take Ekman's List of Basic Emotions (1972) (Anger, Disgust, Fear, Happiness, Sadness, Surprise) we might be able to create itemsets of emotions that people experience after events such as Robbery, School Shooting, Winning the Lottery, etc. The specific events would be the antecedents and the emotions would the consequents. Example of itemsets can be (Robbery, Disgust, Anger), (School Shooting, Anger, Disgust, Fear, Sadness). I also believe that in order for such classification to hold true, the level of support and level of confidence must be quite high because depending on people's experience and backgrounds, the emotions can vary from one extreme to another To achieve this task, one would want to collect data from several cultural and/or ethnic groups within a society. The collected data should include an event and a list of emotions. The event would represent the transaction and the emotions would represent the transaction items

Explanation / Answer

Yes. I agree with the above statements. Because, we can definitely classify emotions as there are different kinds of emotions such as anger, fear, sadness, disgust, anxiety, worry, tension, happiness, joy, extesy, bliss, etc,. Basically all emotions can be classified into two types. One is pleasant emotions and the other is unpleasant emotions. Pleasant emotions are happiness, joy, extesy and bliss. Unpleasant emotions are sadness, worry, tension, anxiety, fear, anger. With every emotion that is felt by a human being, there is different type of chemical reaction that takes place within the body.

Now, coming to the question, it is true that the level of support and confidence must be quite high as the emotions vary not only from one extreme to another such as happiness to sadness but also they are different in different persons and also different in the same person in different situations. One person may go through the situation with tension while some other may go through the same situation with lot of happiness. This happens because one person may like to perform challenging and risky tasks while the other person cannot tolerate and handle risk. This is due to people's experience and backgrounds as mentioned in the question. So, for the study we need to select people with utmost care, usually normal people. We need to study the type of event such as robbery, school shooting, etc,. that constitute the transactions or antecedents and the emotions like anger, fear, sadness due to such events which constitute the consequents or transaction items. We can then find out what kind of emotions took place in people due to those events, what is the most common emotion that is experienced by many people due to a certain event. For example, due to winning of a lottery, happiness or joy would be the most common emotion for almost all people who won it. In this way statistical study can be conducted and conclusions can be drawn. We can also study the emotional patterns of people of different cultures, backgrounds, nations, gender, etc,. and can identify the differences and know the correlation between such cultures, backgrounds and the emotions, feelings of people of such cultures and backgrounds. For example, people from a certain culture always seems happy and laughs most of the time by having fun in what they do while people of some other cultures are work oriented in a serious manner and do not enjoy what they do.

Hence, I agree with the statements given.
