For the following questions assume that this was a 2-group experim health promotion intervention the other got no intervention. Table 4-Fictitious Life Satisfaction Reformulation No Improvement Life Satisfaction Group Health Promotion (n=21) 19 9 Calculate the ABI and write a findings statement for the results. type of significance? Calculate the NNT and write a findings statement for the results. This calculation demonstrates what type of significance? Show transcribed image textExplanation / Answer
Answer to question# 9)
ABI denotes Absolute Benefit Increase.
ABI = risk in control group - risk in experiment group
Risk in control group = 19/21
Risk in experiment group = 4/21
.
Hence absolute benefit increase : 19/21 - 4/21
ABI = (19 -4) / 21
ABI = 15/21 = 0.71428
.
Interpretation: Absolute benefit increase tells us the benefit in absolute terms obtained from the treatment . In the aove scenario the increase in benefit is upto 71.43%. it is a good imporvement by the application of the intervention. It tells us about the increase in the number of subjects who are benefitted.
Type of significance: Here we can conclude that the results are clinically significant because the improment rate is higher, even for smaller samples. Hence the type of significance for this scenario is clinical significance.
.
NNT it is the number needed to treat
We can calculate the numbers needed to treat by the help of ABI
The formula is as follows:
NNT = 1/ABI
Thus , NNT = 1 / (15/21)
NNT = 21 /15
NNT = 1.4
.
Since we have made use of ABI here, because we are dealing with a good event , we would interpret the NNT differently here
We know that higher value of ABI implies that the benefit from the treatment is higher.
Interpretation: If ABI is high , it will cause the NNT value to decrease. Thus a NNT value of 1.4 indicates that the treatment is effective and leads to more benefit due to the intervention. 1.4 patients needed to be treated to prevent one bad outcome , or to lead to one more improved outcome
Type of significance: Again the type of significance for NTT is also Clinical significance. As per the value of NNT , less than 2 persons help cause improvement in the subjects, and the ideal value of NNT is 1. This means the treatment is completely effective. We can observe that with the intervention , there were only 4 out of 21 who didnot improve , rest all the subjects showed improvement.
