Explanation / Answer

Which of the two species on the graph is more prone to extinction and why?

Ans: As per the graph, both panda and recon is almost similar in number but the available resources in case of the panda is much lesser than recon. As per the rule of thumb, as the availability of resources increases, the chance of survival also increases and vice versa. In this case, the availability of resources for the panda is much lesser, thus there is a greater chance of its extinction.

What advantage does the characteristic indicated by letter D bestow upon the animal who occupies this niche, as opposed to the animal occupying the other niche?

Ans: Animals occupies the region D is having advantage interns of the availability of resources. The curve is following a characteristic of normal frequency characteristics which is the indication of best condition for the survival for most of the animals. On the contrary, animals situated in the right and left side of this curve shows concentration in a particular region which leads to competition among the species in the later stage and can lead to changes in the biodiversity.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What does region E represent?

Ans: The E region is showing the existence of a number of species in a very confined region with limited resource and can be resulted into competition in future among the co-existing species for their survival.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What does the height of each of the curves on the graph represent?

Ans: The height of each curve indicates the number of individuals present in respect to the available resources.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Which of the two animals, the panda or the raccoon, is considered a generalist? Why?

Ans: Of these two, recon is a generalist. Generalist species can survive under the different environmental condition and under different kinds of available resources. From the given graph it can be seen that the wide range of available resource for recon which makes its generalist over panda which is having a narrow area of the available resource.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Describe what happens when species partition resources.

Ans: When species are going to partition resources the most important phenomena that is going to happen is the declining species diversity because all the similar kind of species are going to accumulate in that particular area rather other regions.

What method of hunting prey do Arctic foxes use?

Ans: Arctic foxes have a very strong smelling power. It first starts smelling the surface for any kind of under snow animals like rodents. If it is found then the arctic fox does jump in the air and fall directly on its strong face where there is prey under snow. The color of the arctic fox is also one of the factors which helps in the hunting of the pay as its act like Concealment.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Determine which portion of the accompanying graph represents the number of reindeer that can be sustained indefinitely in a given area. What term illustrates this?

Ans: The letter A is the portion where the accompanying graph represents the number of reindeer that can be sustained indefinitely in a given area as the number of reindeer is very less than the available resources and carrying capacity of the environemnt.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What does it mean when a population uses up their resource supplies and temporarily overshoots? Which letter on this graph represents when this has occurred to a certain reindeer population?

Ans: When carrying capacity of the surrounding environment is going to exceed the necessity of species then there is a chance of temporary overshoot. In the given graph letter B is associated with a large population which can lead to a huge demand for food and further temporary overshoots. Thus B letter on graph qualifies the overshoot condition.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

What happens to a population if a dieback occurs, and which portion of the graph represents this?

Ans: If there would be a dieback there would be a sharp fall in the population of that species. In the given graph, C letter portion shows such kind of condition.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Given the following formula: Population change = (Births + Immigration) ? (Deaths + emigration) What are two ways that the rate of the global population change can be reduced?

Ans: Two ways of reducing the global population change are-

1. The balance between in-migration or immigration and outmigration or emigration.

2. The balance between stable and low birth rate and stable and low death rates.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Which diagram has similar numbers of males and females in pre-reproductive and reproductive categories?

Ans:

The meaning of pre-reproductive category is 0-14 year (too early for production)

and the reproductive category is 15-44 years.

From the given diagrams, D (Germany, Bulgaria, and Sweden) shows the best among the given. Rest of the diagram shows a slight tendency of movement towards the male population in these two categories.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the United States, Australia, and Canada, which gender is represented by the largest numbers in the later years of life?

Ans: For United States, Australia, and Canada, Female gender is represented largest number in the later stage of life.

-----------------------------------------------------

What type of rate is lower in more-developed countries as compared to less-developed countries and why?

Ans: Death rate is lower in more developed countries as compared to less developed countries mainly due to the following factors-

a. industrialization and better income

b. Better healthcare facility

c. better educational facility for the women.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How and why is the replacement level fertility rate different in more-developed countries as compared with less-developed countries?

Ans: Replacement level fertility rate is also known as children per woman. In developed countries children per woman is lesser than the less-developed countries because in developed countries there is better economic stability which leads to focus on the quality of the children rather than quantity. On the contrary in the less developed countries, children per woman is higher because it is assumed that greater the number of children, better would be the total family income.
