Question
Choosing a school for your child to can have a critical impact on that child’s future. The frequency polygons below reflect the Regents exam scores of 50 students who attended the Macy School (dashed line) and 50 students who attended the Coffin School (solid line) in Brooklyn. [The Regents exams are scored on a scale of 0-100 with 100 being the best possible score.] Based on the patterns you see in these two frequency polygons:
Estimate the mean score at the Coffin School, the mean score at the Macys school, mode of the coffin school, mode at the macys school, which school has a larger standard deviation and lastly which school would you prefer to send your child?
Explanation / Answer
The better choice among the two given is Macy school because the mean score for this is higher as compared to the mean score of Coffin School. Although the Macy school has some students who even scored 60 while the minimum score of Coffin school seems to be 65 but the Macy school has more data on the higher side of scores.
So it would be better to choose Macy school.
