A collage is proposing some changes in its food service options so they are planning to survey their students. One of the adminsitors has taken statistics and claims they so not have to survey every single student but can do a random sampling. He proposes the following strategies for choosing a sample. Identify each sampling type and describe any potential shortcoming

a. Randomly select 12 freshman, 12 sophomres,12 junors and 12 sneiors.

c. Assign every student a unique random number and take the first 50 in order.

Explanation / Answer

a) Stratified random sampling - The only shortcoming here is that it is not as easy as simple random sampling to find 12 students from each year.

b) Systematic sampling - It might not be as random as a simple random sample

c) Random sampling - Prone to sampling error

d) Cluster sampling - May result in an under representative sample
