Which type of organism do you think is most likely to be preserved? One that gets buried quickly or one that gets buried slowly? 6. What are three biotic factors that can affect an organism after death? Fossils on the Internet 185Explanation / Answer
1. In order for a dinosaur to become a fossil the first thing that is needed is the death of dinosaurs which is then buried under sediments derived from various agent of sedimentation (for example water, wind etc.) after this the sedimentation continues and become more compressed and thus lithification of sediments takes place. After this period of sedimentation then due to erosion or other tectonic activity the fossil comes needed to the surface and palaeontologists dug the sediments to get the fossil out.
2. The word fossil from Latin means anything which is dig up from the subsurface. And hence we can say fossil refers to any evidence of the ancient life ( can be traces of the organisms or plants or can be the skeleton remains of the organisms).
3. Palaeontologists are the scientists who uses these fossil records to comment about various conditions that exists during the time when those organisms lived. For example they tell us about the sea level that existed in the past, the amount of carbon dioxide concentration, the alkalinity of the oceans, the type of plants and animals that existed during that time.
4. Various examples of traces are:
Footprints or track marks.
Bioturbation marks of animals.
Traces of leaves of plants.
Tooth marks of animals.
Coprolites ( feces of fossil) also comes under the category of trace fossils.
