Question
5) For the data shown by the histogram below how does the median value compare to the mean value? Explain your answer in a few sentences The following data result was tabulated from a survey about competitiveness All participants completed surveys that used a numerical collection consisting of 1-strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree. M-mean, SD = Standard Deviation Measure CHINA JAPANUSTOTA MEN AGE WOMEN 20.8 0.8 20 TOTAL 21.01.4 20 MEN 29.37.1127 Enjoy Competition WOMEN 30.88.130 TOTAL 13 MEN 36 14. 4.7 Not E WOMEN 15.6 4.1 14.53.15 TOTAL S i) Which group has the higher variability: Chinese women who do enjoy competition, or American women who do not enjoy competition? Explain your decision. ii) Who has a higher Z-score: an American man in the survey with an age of 21 or a Japanese man in the survey with an age of 21?Explanation / Answer
Solution:
(5) The given histogram is left skewed, when our sample data are left skewed then value of median is greater than the mean.
Therefore, here median > Mean.
6) (i) Since Chinese woman who do enjoy competition has the higher variability because it has the standard deviation =8.1 higher than American women who do not enjoy competition
(ii) z score for American Man = ( X - Mean) /SD
= (21-19.6)/1.6 = 0.875
Z score for Japanese Man =(21-20.6)/0.1= 4
Therefore, Japanese man has the higher z score.
