Question

2. (Problem 3.7 from Text) You have been told to continue monitoring the resistance of an electronic component using the existing Shewhart control charting scheme using the same sampling method as the person on the previous shift.. You see in a log th and the estimate of ox that he determined from his data was 0.207 ohms. There is, however, no record of the sample size he used. Based on the information available to you, what sample size do you use to continue testing in the same manner? at for the samples he collected, R (bar)was 0.525 ohms,

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

We are given that x= 0.207 and R(bar) = 0.525 and we also know that x = R/d2. This gives us that
d2 = R/x =(0.525)/(0.207) = 2.536.
Looking at values for d2 in Table in the Appendix we see that this is approximately equal to the d2 value for n = 6 (for n = 6, d2 = 2.534). Therefore we can say that the samples were of size n = 6
