Question
A standard UNO deck consists of 108 cards (see attached image). There are four suits (red green, yellow, and blue). Each suit consists of 1 zero and two each of one, two, nine, skip, draw two, and reverse. There are also 8 wild cards. a) (2 points) What's the probability of drawing a red or a skip? b) (2 points) What's the probability of drawing a red given that a skip was drawn? c) (2 points) What's the probability of drawing a red card? d (2 points) Are drawing a red card and drawing a skip independent events? Explain. e) (3 points) What's the probability of drawing two cards without replacement and getting two wilds? f 3 points) What's the probability of drawing two cards without replacement and getting at most one wild?Explanation / Answer
Each of the four suits has 25 cards and 8 are common cards.
(a)
Out of 108 cards, 25 are red cards and 8 are skip cards so
P(red) = 25/108
P(skip) = 8/108
Out of 108 cards, 2 are red skip cards so
P(red and skip) = 2/108
Therefore the probability of getting a red or skip card is
P(red or skip) = P(red) + P(skip) - P(red and skip) = (25/108) + (8/108) - (2/108) = 31 /108 = 0.2870
(b)
P(red | skip) = P(red and skip) / P(skip) = (2/108) / (8/108) = 2/8 = 0.25
(c)
Out of 108 cards, 25 are red cards so
P(red) = 25/108 = 0.2315
(d)
Since P(red)P(slip) not equal to P(red and skip) so events getting a red card and getting a skip card is not independent.
