Question
Is the average body temperature actually less than 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit for healthy human adults? A sample of 21 healthy human adults was taken. Avg: 98.39
There are three conditions that must be satisfied for conclusions from the t-test to be valid to the population of interest. Assess each of these conditions.
a. Condition 1: the sample is representative of the population. Note that there is not much information about the make-up of the 21 individuals and how they were selected. Discuss what would make these 21 “representative” of the population.
b. Condition 2: the distribution of sample means is normal. You’ll need to include a graph to support your assessment of this condition.
c. Condition 3: the observations are independent of each other. Discuss what this condition means in the context of the problem and whether or not you believe this conditions is true.
Explanation / Answer
(A)
Sample should be randomly selected from the population. That is sample should be simple random sample.
(B)
It is not given that population is normally distributed and sample size is less than 30 so we cannot assume that distribution of sample mean is normally distributed.
(C)
Each adult tempertaure is independent from other adut temperature. So this assumption fullfilled.
