Question

Licciardone et al. examined subjects with chronic, non-specific low back pain. In this study, 18 of the subjects completed a survey questionnaire assessing physical functioning at baseline, and after one, three and six months. In the table below, the data appears for these subjects who received a sham treatment that appeared to be genuine osteopathic manipulation. Higher values indicate better physical functioning. The goal was to determine if subjects would report improvement over time even though the treatment they received would provide minimal improvement. We wish to know if there is a difference in the mean survey values among the four points in time. Perform a 4 C’s analysis (Context, Condition, Calculation, Conclusion) to determine if a difference exists in different time points. If you find that time is significant perform both Tukey’s multiple Comparison Procedure and Dunnet’s using Baseline as the control group. Use minitab, include boxplot.

Explanation / Answer

Here , claim: We wish to know if there is a difference in the mean survey values among the four points in time

Here let , 1 , 2 , 3 , 4   = population mean for Baseline ,1 Month, ,3 Months,6 Months respectively .

Here we test hypothesis as,

One-way ANOVA:

Source DF SS MS F P
Treatment 3 2396 799 1.96 0.128
Error 68 27642 406
Total 71 30037

Decision : So here , p- value = 0.128 > 0.05 ; Fail to reject H0.

Conclusion : We concluse that , there is not significant eveidence

So we conclusde that , there is a no difference in the mean survey values among the four points in time. that is all means are equal .

ANOVA is not significant , all means are equal so we cant perform remainug test ,
