Question
A carefully designed and executed experiment has just been concluded. This was an experiment with one independent variable at three levels with five repeats. The results of ANOVA indi cated that the Fdata was less than the Fcritical (Fiable for 0.05 significance. Answer the following questions a. State a conclusion for this experiment using statistical terms b. What useful information, if any, can you supply based on these results? c. The experimenters want to increase the significance level until Fdata is greater than Fcritical Does this work? Discuss this approach. d. The experimenters would like to redo the experiment with no repeats (to save time and money). What would you tell the experimenters about this idea? Discuss the use of a t-test as an alternative to the ANOVA. e.Explanation / Answer
a)
Since the F Observed is less then F Critical at alpha = 0.05, we fail to reject the null hypothesis. ie the means at all the three level are equal.
b)
The means of all the groups of the variable is same at all the three levels.
c)
No. This approach is incorrect. Manipulating the F Critical just to reject the null hypothesis is incorrect way of doing the statistical tests. This will introduce bias in the results which will void one of the necessary conditions of hypothesis testing (random sampling).
d)
In this Case, we cannot perform ANOVA on these data-points as ANOVA is used to compare the means of three or more group means.
e)
The t-test is used to test differences in means between two groups. A pairwise comparison can be done using t-test to test the hypothesis that the means of all the three groups are same or not.
