Question

Comparing Two Means or Two Medians 14. Many baseball players believe that "corking" their bats will help them hit the ball farther. To cork their bats, the players hollow out the barrel of a wooden Il it with cork to make it lighter. Does this work?* Design an experiment to find out if this is true for you. (a) What are the explanatory and response variables in your experiment? (b) What are the treatments in your experiment? (c) How will you incorporate randomization in your experiment? (d) What variables would be important to control during this experiment? (e) Can you be blind in this experiment? Explain why this is important.

Explanation / Answer

Answer to the question)

Part a)

Explanatory variable is the one that explains the variation in another variable

in this case presence or absence of cork in bat , explains the distance travelled by the ball

thus the explanatory variable is "cork" it has two levels : present or not

The dependent variable: distance travelled by the ball hit by the bat

.

Part b)

The treatment is providing cork in some bats, the control group would consists of bat with no cork. The treatment is defined by the independent or the explanatory variable, In this scenario it is the presence or absence of cork. Thus putting cork in the bat is the treatment, and not putting cork in the bat would serve as the control group.

.

Part c)

The speed of the ball or distance travelled also depends on the baseball players. hence it is important to assign the bats filled or not filled with cork to the players randomly. This ensures that the influence in the distance travelled by the ball is not due to chance or due to the extraneuous variable the "player'. It cna be purely attributed to the bat.

.

Part d)

The variables to be controlled are:

.

Part e)

Yes the experiment can be blinded as follows:

Blinding the experiment is important to get authentic results of the research, and reduce respondent or expeiremnter bias from the research.
