(Please help me whether I answered the questions right or not, also help me to solve these questions.)
1. (16 Points) Below are test scores of nine students in two set of tests (test 1 and 2). Input the data into SPSS (or other appropriate statistical software) and answer the following questions
NOTE: You will find the file, “Calculating Descriptive Statistics in SPSS”, useful.
Test1: 4, 5, 5, 5, 7, 7, 7, 7 and 7
Test2: 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7 and 8
a. Calculate and report the mean and standard deviation for each of the distributions (test scores): Test 1: Standard Deviation: 1.225, Mean: 6, Test 2: Standard Deviation: 1.225, Mean: 6.
b. Based on the mean and the standard deviation, will you say that the two distributions are the same? Justify your response:
Even though it has the same SD and means but I think it’s too rash to conclude that both are the same.
c. Calculate and report the other measures of central tendency:
Test 1. Mean: 6, Median: 7, and Mode: 7. Test 2. Mean:6, Median: 6, and Mode: 6.
d. What can you say about the measures of central tendency of each of the distributions (test scores): Even though both test data has the same mean and standard deviation, but I can find differences in mode and median between test 1 and test 2 data variables.
Graph a histogram with a normal distribution curve for each of the distributions (See “Calculating Descriptive Statistics in SPSS”)
e. Which of the two graphs (histograms) is normally distributed? When I look at the histogram from my SPSS data view. I can notify that test 2 is normally distributed than the test 1 histogram graph.
f. Based on this exercise, what can you say about measures of central tendency and normal distribution curve?
The mode is the most frequent score that we can find test 1 and test 2 data set.
Explanation / Answer
a. Calculate and report the mean and standard deviation for each of the distributions (test scores)
mean of test 1=6
standard deviation of test1=1.224745
mean of test 2=6
standard deviation of test 2=1.224745
Based on the mean and the standard deviation, will you say that the two distributions are the same? Justify your response:
Even though mean and standard deviations are same we cannot say that the distributions are same.
We dont know other measure of central tendency
Ex if median are also same then we can say that distribution is normal.
c. Calculate and report the other measures of central tendency:
mean of test 1=sum of observations/total observations
=54/9
=6
median is middle most value when data arranged in ascending order
Ascending order:4 5 5 5 7 7 7 7 7
median of test1=7
mode is most repeating item.
mode for test1=7
For test2 mean =sum/total=54/9=6
for test 2 median=middlemost=6
mode=6
d. What can you say about the measures of central tendency of each of the distributions (test scores)
for test 2 mean=median=mode=6
test 2 follows normal distribution
For test 1
mean=6
median=7
mean<median
test 1 follows negative skewed distribution.
