Analysis in Piston Manufecturing Unit Technology, 4(3), 2015, 1157- 1163.), gives 3. (20 pts) The following Pareto chart (Ashwini, A.,.and Avinash, K.S, Rejection International Journal of Innovative Research in Science. Engineering and defect data for piston manufacture for the automotive industry. Refer to the chart and answer t the following questions Pareto Chart of defects 2600 2000 1600 100 60 600 20 defects total 689 115 81 76 76 73 72 71 61 45 65 a) In the Pareto chart above, list the 'critical few' defects. What total percentage to these critical few represent? b) What is the cumulative percentage for defects for skirt diameter variation', 'scratches', and fixture seat variation taken together? c) The two most frequent defects account for what percentage of the total defects? 2

Explanation / Answer

a) The first five defect on the x-axis from the left side are the critical defects.

The total percentage to these five critical defects is approximately equal to 80%.

Here we used cumulative relative frequency chart ( in percentage ).

b) The approximate (80 - 60 ) = 20% cumulative percentage for defects for 'skirt diameter variation', 'scratches' , and fixture seat variation' taken together.

c) The 'compression height variation' , and 'parts damage' taken together approximate 60% of the total percentage of defects.
