Question
Part D: Soft and flat emotions Soft emotion and flat emotion are two types of emotion that people sometimes experience during relationship conflicts. Is there a gender difference in the extent to which people report experiencing these two emotions? Sanford (2007) investigated soft and flat emotion in a sample of 700 married women and 524 married men. Each participant was asked to think of a recent episode of marital conflict and to answer questions regarding his or her emotions at the time of the conflict. Soft emotion was measured by a 4-item scale measuring the extent to which a person felt “hurt," "sad" "concerned," or "disappointed." Cronbach's alpha was used to estimate reliability. Alphas were .78 for wives and .75 for husbands. Flat emotion was measured by a 4-item scale measuring the extent to which a person felt "bored," "uninterested," "indifferent," and "disengaged." Alphas were .81 for wives and.85 for husbands The results from this study are listed below. Use these results to compute the effect size (d-statistic) for the difference between women and men on both soft emotion and flat emotion. Also answer questions regarding the reliability of the variablesExplanation / Answer
For soft emotion
32) The sum of squares for men
standard deviation= 0.94
variance= (0.94)^2= 0.8836
Variance= s^2= SS/N-1
0.8836= S.S/524-1
0.8836= S.S/523
S.S FOR MEN= 0.8836*523= 462.1228
33) SUM OF SQUARES(S.S) FOR WOMEN
STANDARD DAVIATION = 0.98
VARIANCE= s^2= (0.98)^2= 0.9604
s^2= 0.9604= S.S/700-1
0.9604*699= S.S
S.S= 671.3196
34) D.F1= N1-1= 524-1= 523
D.F2= N2-1= 700-1=699
DF1+DF2= 523+699= 1222
35) POOLED STANDARD DEVIATION
Spooled= sqrt((s1^2+s2^2)/2)
sqrt((0.8836+0.9604)/2)
= 0.96
36) The d statistic is
Cohen's d = (2.61 - 2.13) 0.960208 = 0.499892.
The effect for soft emotion is MEDIUM.
