Question
One place that we see the margin of error in the real world is in public opinion polls. The website www.pollingreport.com gives summaries of many public opinion polls. One of the elements they include is something they abbreviate as MoE. This is the Margin of Error that we are talking about this week. When presenting these results the site does not mention the confidence level. This is because by default the news media uses 95% confidence and you can assume for most polls presented by reputable news sources that they are using 95% confidence.
I had to choose an example poll from pollingreport.com [http://pollingreport.com/sports.htm]
1.Using your chosen poll as an example give a short (3-4 paragraphs) explanation of what the margin of error tells us about this situation. Be sure to specify the parameter of interest and how the statistic is used to estimate that parameter.
2. Write your explanation so that someone who has not taken a statistics class will understand it.
Quinnipiac University Poll. Sept. 6-9, 2018. N=1,038 registered voters nationwide. Margin of error ± 3.7.
"As you may know, some NFL players are choosing to kneel during the national anthem as a form of protest. Do you approve or disapprove of this form of protest?"
