Question

A plane leaves New York for Los Angeles Traveling at an avergespeed of 500 MPH. A second plane leaves from Los Angeles 2 hourslater bound for New York, 3200 miles away. Taking advantage of thejet strea,, the second plane averages 600 MPH. How many hoursafter the first plane took off will the two planes pass eachother?

My work:
Distance=Velocity * Time
The first Jet has a 2 hour advance so it has traveled 1000 milesjust as the second jet took off.

Plane 1: 3200-1000= 2200 miles going 500 MPH
Plane 2: 3200 MPH going 600MPH

From here, Im not sure what to do. I thought about2200/500-3200/600= Time?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Thank you!

Explanation / Answer

Los Angeles is at y=0km and New York at y=3200km. Plane 1 leaves at x=0 hours y=3200-500x Plane 2 leaves at x=2 hours y=600(x-2)=600x-1200 600x-1200=3200-500x 1100x=4400 (both sides +500x and +1200) x=4 (both sides divide by 1100) They meet after 4 hours
