Question

Directions: Model each situation with a linearfunction.

1. A newly-started high school hopes to enroll 80 students in itsfirst year and to increase enrollment by 40 students per year overthe next five year.

2. Temperature on the Fahrenheit scale is a linear function oftemperature on the Celsius scale. Ten degrees Celsius equals 50degrees, Fahrenheit and 25 degrees Celsisus equals 77 degreesFahrenheit.

3. Natalie spends 90 minutes doing her math and English homework. The time she spends on her math homework is a function of the timeshe spends on her English homework.

Explanation / Answer

1. Enrollment = 80 + 40x, where x = # of years. 2. (77 - 50)/(25 - 10) = 27/15 = 9/5, so even Celcius degreeis 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees. F = 1.8C + b, where we can solvefor b by plugging a point into the equation and solving. 50 =1.8(10) + b, so b = 50 - 18 = 32. So F = 1.8C + 32. 3. If M is the minutes spent on math, and E on English, 90 =M + E. So, as a function of E, M = 90 - E.
