Question

Take a moment and look at or think about newspapers, magazines, or Internet articles you have recently read. Look for examples of how numbers are used in advertisements. For example, it is not unusual to see something like "more than 80% of customers prefer this brand" or "four out of five dentists recommend Brand T gum for their patients who chew gum." Why do advertisers use numbers like these? What information are they trying to convey? Think about how they may have arrived at these probabilities. Do you think that the information they are giving is accurate? Why or why not?

Also, consider the fact that in everyday life, we often try to guess how likely or probable an event is and base decisions on these guesses. Give an example of when you may use probability to make a decision in your everyday life or career.

This question has several parts. None of the questions within this post require a lengthy answer, but please be sure to answer all parts thoroughly.

Explanation / Answer

Advertisers use number like this because these numers give a clear image of the brand or the product being used by the people. When an advertiser uses these type of statements it create an active imagination in the person to view it as the real thing. These type of probablities gives an idea to people to visualize things which advertisers want to show.

They arrive at these probablities by taking random samples from different countries and convert them into percentage that can be used for fine advertisment purposes. The information is not accurate but its not wholly wrong it doesn't show 100% correct result but the uses probablity to show the large data in easy and refined way. But know that probablity is very important in these kind of events as if there is no probablity then its never easy to handle this large data, forget about getting a conclusion.

Example-1. Nowadays 60% farmers are prefering organic farming rather than using fertilizers.

2. Its a 50% chance that it will rain today.
