1.After learning the concepts of dry matter and as fed, you realize you have been spending a lot of money on canned dog food and want to switch to dry food for your pet. The canned food you have been feeding is 8% crude protein on an as fed basis, and the food is 78% moisture. The new food you are considering is 28% CP and 12% moisture. How do these 2 dog foods compare in protein as you decide whether to switch to this new dog food?

2.Formulate 100 pounds of a mixed feed that is 16% CP using corn and soybean meal. The corn is 87% DM, 9% CP on a DM basis. The soybean meal is 88% DM, 49% CP on a DM basis. In this diet, you must add vitamins and minerals, so you have to allow for 5% slack space.   Remember, you must calculate the ration on a DM basis, then convert to As Fed basis (so you know how much of each feed to weigh to put in the mixer). You are making the 100 pounds on a dry matter basis, so your final amounts of corn and SBM will add up to be more than 100 pounds on an as-fed basis.

3.A 600 kg horse doing moderate work has a crude protein requirement of 2.57 lbs. of crude protein (CP) per day and a digestible energy (DE) requirement of 29.1 mcal of DE per day.

Use oats and grass/clover hay to formulate a diet for the horse. The oats contain 13% CP and 1.7 Mcal DE/ lb and is 89%DM. The hay contains 18% CP and 1.1 Mcal DE/ lb on a DM basis, and is 90% DM.

Make sure to include how many pounds of oats and hay you will need, both on Dry Matter basis and an As Fed basis.

1. Given: canned food data:

crude protein = 8%

Moisture = 78%

New food data :

CP = 28%

Moisture = 12%

Here amount of dry matter is (100-12)=88%

Dry matter protein content = (28/88)×100= 31.81%

But for the first food,

Amount of dry matter = (100-78)= 22%

Hence dry matter protein content = (8/22)×100= 36.36%

Hence food 1 has more dry matter protein than second one.
