Question
5. I wish to conduct an experiment to determine the effectiveness of a new language arts program for tenth grade students in my local school district (there are two high schools with a total of approximately 600 10th grade students) who need foreign language credits to qualify for admission into major universities. What parameters would I need to establish on the test (# of samples, who would conduct the test, test conditions, ethical questions, etc.)? Be as specific as you can (you don’t need to be educational experts to answer this). What would be an appropriate statistical test for this data and research question? Why would this be more appropriate than some other statistical test?
Explanation / Answer
Whether foreign language credits really increases because of the new language arts program has to be thoroughly checked.
For this a sample of random students, say 50 can be taken and separated into two groups, one attending the new language and other group not attending. Then both will write admission test and average of qualified from both groups taken out.
Comparison of means should be done at 1% signficance with t test with H0: mu1 = mu2 and Ha: mu1 > mu2
where mu1 is the average who attended the new language arts program.
t test paired is a better test than any other because sample std deviation only we know and not population. So normal test cannot be used.
Also the group is divided into pairs and hence paired test is a test suitable here.
