Question
An NFL football player visits his doctor because he is experiencing dizziness, blurred vision, and headaches after a game where he was violently tackled and hit is head. The doctor is concerned that the player may have a concussion, and orders a test to try to determine if this is true. Please craft a table showing the four possible outcomes that may result based on presence or absence of a concussion and the decision the doctor makes about whether the concussion is present or absent. Be sure to label all parts of the table, as well as each of the 4 cells. Be sure to highlight which outcome constitutes a Type 1 error and which constitutes a Type 2 error.
Explanation / Answer
To test wether the Concussion is present or not. First null hypothesis should be set. Null hypothesis is the hypothesis of no difference. So
H0 : Concussion is absent
against the alternative hypothesis
H1 : Concussion is present
The four possible outcomes for testing this hypothesis can be formulated in a table as
Null hypothesis is True/valid False/unvalid Rejected Type I error (Reject H0 when H0 is true) Correct Inference (Reject H0 when H0 is false) Accepted Correct inference(Accept H0 when H0 is true) Type II error (Accept H0 when H0 is false)
