Question
In a research project intended to gather data on the effects of type of study method on examination performance, subjects are randomly assigned to one of two conditions. in 1 condition , they study alone, using notes taken during class lectures. In the 2nd condition, subnjects study in interactive groups with notes from class lecture. The amount of time spent studying is held constant. All students then take the exam. In this study:1) What is the independent variable 2) What is the dependent variable 3) Identify the control and experimental groups 4) Is the independnet variable manipulated, or is it a particiopant varible?
Explanation / Answer
1) In the situation, there is one independent categorical variables related to conditions of study
The categorical variable X takes 1 if Students are studying alone, using notes taken during class lectures.
otherwise, it takes 0 if students are studying in interactive groups with notes from class lectures.
2) The dependent variable(Y say) is the performace of the students by using exam
3) The variables teaching methodolgy, capability of the student, regular attendence of the class, the amount of time spent studying etc, are increased in the marks of students. But in our example, these variables are assumed to fixed or constant. These variables are called control variables.
Experimental variables is studyof thestudent (either alone or interactive groups)
4) It is a participonent variable. Draw sample of the students and identify the students whether study alone or interactive ang give it 1 or 0.
