Question

Kuru is a prion disease of the Fore people of highland New Guinea. Kuru is similar to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. It was once transmitted by the consumption of deceased relatives at mortuary fests, a ritual that was ended by about 1960. Using archived tissue samples, Mead investigated generic variants that might confer resistance to kuru. The data in the accompanying table are genotypes at codon 129 of the prion protein gene of young and elderly individually all having the disease. Since the elderly individuals have survived long exposure to kuru, unusually common genotypes in this group might indicate resistant genotypes.

a. Illustrate theses data with a grouped bar graph. Which genotype are especially prevalent in the elderly compared with young individuals?

b. Test whether genotype frequencies differ between two age groups.

Explanation / Answer

The accompanying table is not displayed. Kindly check. Still trying to guide you with procedure.

a. For grouped bar graph, enter the data in Minitab (You can use Excel also). Go to Graph> Bar chart and select 'Values from a table' and click 'Cluster' and click OK. In the dialog box, Enter crresponding graph and categorical variables. Click OK. The bar chart will b edisplayed in output window.

b) Two test, genotype frequencies differ between two groups, you can comput ecolumn percentage and compare or else for statistically significant difference perform the Chi-square test.
