Question

Now, suppose you were instantly transported to U.S. Bank Stadium, in Minneapolis, Minnesota where Super Bowl Fifty-two is planned to be held in February of 2018. If the stadium is filled to capacity with 66,655 fans, can you determine the number of handshakes (greetings) that would take place if all of the fans participated in "The Handshake Problem"? If so, determine that number. If not, explain why not. Regardless of whether you can compute the number of handshakes or not, rate the strategies you used (or uncovered) while working on the Handshake Problem activity in terms of their mathematical power. That is, have you learned enough to say that you can efficiently apply your ideas to determine the number of handshakes (greetings) that would have taken place if there had been a much larger number of people? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

If There are n people .They can shake hands with (n1) other people. Since two people shake hands at once, we really count twice as many handshakes as we should since one handshake is counted twice. So, we divide by 2 . this gives us

n(n1)/2handshakes

There fore total no of handshakes will be 66655*(66655-1)/2

=66655*66654/2

=2221411185
