Question

How do we evaluate art? If art is everywhere-- then how do we separate the "good" art from the "bad?" Perhaps the only standard by which we can evaluate a work of art's merit is by our own, individual taste. Yet, works of art exist that are nearly universally regarded as "great." How do such works achieve such an honored state if art is subjected to such individualistic judgments? So, by what standards do we judge great art? What does a work of art need to have in order to transcend being merely a painting and become a masterpiece?
