Question
Using an example of some human trait, describe it in terms of a normal distribution, and then give me an example of a sample from that population that would not be normal. For example, if I was looking at age in the general population I would get a normal distribution. If, on the other hand, I was looking at age in a residential care center for individuals with dementia I would likely get a negatively skewed distribution with most residents being older and a tail off to the left of younger people. Other than age, can you think of a human trait that would present with a normal distribution in the general population? Describe what the distribution would look like. Now, think of a subset of that population that might be skewed. Describe the distribution. Is it a positive skew or a negative skew?
Explanation / Answer
The height of men in the general population will be normal, but height for men suffering from down syndrome will produce a negatively skewed ditribution with most of them having shorter height.
