Question

For each of the following scenarios, define the null hypothesis (H_0) and the alternate hypothesis (H_1): The mean edge crush strength of corrugated cartons is being investigated to see if they meet the standard that the mean strength must be at least 32 pounds per inch The mean saline concentration in a shipment of 1 gallon containers is tested to see if the containers meet the specification of 4.5% saline The standard deviation of the time to complete a seam weld is tested to check if it is exceeding the planned amount of 6 seconds. For each of the following scenarios, determine the appropriate critical value(s) for comparison. On the cover sheet, you should include both the symbol and the value(s).

Explanation / Answer

1.a)The null hypothesis is:

H0: The mean is 32 pounds per inch

Against the alternative hypothesis:

H1: The mean is greater than 32 pounds per inch

b) The null hypothesis is:

H0: The mean saline concentration is 4.5% saline

Against the alternative hypothesis:

H1: The mean saline concentration is not 4.5% saline

c) The null hypothesis is:

H0: The standard deviation of time is 6 seconds

Against the alternative hypothesis:

H1: The standard deviation of time is greater than 6 seconds

2.a)Since sigma^2 is unknown a t test should be used.

Thus the required critical value is t(0.05,14-1)

=t(0.05,13)

=+/-2.160 (The test is two tailed)

c) Since sigma^2 is known a z test should be used.

Thus the required critical value is z(0.10)=+1.645 (the test is right tailed)
