Question

I have answered everything except for the last question:
These graphical displays represent a different impression. what qualitative description would you apply to these data on the basis of the stem and leaf plot and the second histogram? why is it different? what's going on?

Math 10 Morriss Basal Metabolic Rate The basal metabolic rate (BMR) is a measure of the energy a human body uses to maintain life support (breathe, pump and filter blood, etc.), essential information for medical research. BMRs in healthy people can vary from about 900 to around 2400 kilocalories per day (kcal/day). Here are the BMRs of 33 study participants, 1120 1230 1290 1310 1340 1360 1380 1390 1390 1430 1440 1450 1450 1480 1490 1510 1520 1550 1610 1620 1680 1690 1720 1730 1940 1940 1950 2010 2080 2090 2240 2350 2350 Displ 500 kcal/day: 900-1399, 1400-1899, & 1900-2399 kcal/day. ay these data as a histogram with three classes, each of width Based on the appearance of your histogram, describe the data qualitatively. Does the data appear to be most accuratehy described as symmetric and mound-shaped? Skewed to the left or right? Bimodal? Explain why you think so. Make another histogram of these data with five classes, each of width 300 kcal/day: 900-1199, 1200-1499, 1500-1799, 1800-2099, and 2100-2399 kcal/day. Make a stem-and-leaf plot of the data. qualitative description would you apply to these data on the basis different? What's going on? These graphical displays present a different impression. What of the stem-and-leaf plot and the second histogram? Why is it

Explanation / Answer

Stem-and-Leaf Display

N = 33
Leaf Unit = 100

15   1 122333333444444
(12) 1 555666677999
6    2 000233

From the first and second histograms, we observe that as the class width is 500 the distribution looks like symmetric, where as for the second it looks like assymetric(positively skewed), sinccce it is stretched towards right. where as in stem-and-leaf with leaf size 100, it looks like looks like assymetric(positively skewed), sinccce it is stretched towards right. if it symmetric mean=median=mode, where as for positively skewed distribution mean>median>mode.
