Question
I need help with problem R1M3 in Six Ideas That Shaped Physics Unit R:
(R1M.3) Two recrackers explode simultaneously 125m apart along a railroad track, which we can take to dene the x axis of an IRF (Home). A train (Other) moves at a constant 25m/s in the +x direction relative to the tracks. (a) According to the galilean transformation equations, do the recrackers explode at the same time? (b) How far apart are the explosions as measured in the train frame? [Hint: if x2 x1 = 125m, what is x 2 x 1?] (c) Assume that instead of the explosions being simultaneous, the recracker farther ahead in the +x direction explodes 3.0s before the other. How far apart would the explosions be as measured in the train frame [Hint: it’s not 125m!]
Explanation / Answer
Information travells at the spedd of light.
Since speed of light is much any orders of magnitude larger than the sound velocity and the velocity of the train, distance measured in both cases will be 125m. I had to say that, the hint is wrong.
