Part (a) of the figure shows two charged particles fixed in place on an x axis with separation L. The ratio q1/q2 of their charge magnitudes is 4.00. Part (b) of the figure shows the x component Er of their net electric net, field along the x axis just to the right of particle 2. The x axis scale is set by xs 30.6 cm. (a) At what value of x 0 is Enet,x maximum? (b) If particle 2 has charge -4e, what is the value of that maximum? Assume erettem e- 1.602 x 10 19 c. Explanation / Answer

Let q2 = -q , so , q1 = +4q

Let the position where Enet,x = maximum be P.

So, for that point : Enet,x = k*(q)/x^2 - k*(4q)/(L+x)^2

Now, for Enet,x = 0 , x = xs*2/3

So for k*(q)/x^2 - k*(4q)/(L+x)^2 = 0

So, 1/x^2 = 4/(L+x)^2

So, x = L = xs*2/3

So, L = 20.4 cm

Now, for maximum, dEnet/dx = 0

So, -2/x^3 + 4*2/(L+x)^3 = 0

So, 1/x^3 = 4/(L+x)^3

So, 1/x^3 = 4/(0.204 + x)^3

So, x = 0.347 m = 34.7 cm <-----answer

b)

the maximum value :

Enet,x =  -k*(4e)/x^2 + k*(4*4e)/(L+x)^2

= -9*10^9*(4*1.6*10^-19)/0.347^2 + 9*10^9*(16*1.6*10^-19)/(0.204 + 0.347)^2

= 2.81*10^-8 N
