Question

The first problem involves your role as a researcher for a professional research firm. Your firm is conducting a study for an air travel industry publication. The editors for the journal would like to know their readers’ thoughts on air travel in fields such as ticket purchases, services, safety, comfort, economic growth, and security. They would also like to know the thoughts of adults who use air travel for business as well as for recreation. The editors have provided their readership database and 20 questions that they would like to ask. You know that it is too expensive to contact all of the readers; therefore, you need to determine a way to contact a representative sample of the entire readership population. 1.How would you do it? 1.What sampling technique would you use to select the sample for this study? 2.Describe the method for collecting the data. 3.Identify any possible flaws or biases in your study. 2.How they did it.

Explanation / Answer

One sampling technique is to choose every 4th or 5th reader from the list, because that is far easier and this method would also provide cost-effective SRS sampling.

Data collection would be based on the 20 questions provided by the firm, mostly multiple choice.

The flaws which are possible include the flaws of non-response bias or response bias. It is possible that only those readers reply who are very frequent travellers, or those readers may not show interest to reply who have travelling reasons other than those of business activity or recreation.
