Question

Georgiou and colleagues (1997) reported that college students had healthier eating habits, on average, than did those who were neither college students nor college graduates. The study reported that students ate breakfast an average of 4.1 times per week, with a standard deviation of 2.4. For this exercise, use these numbers as parameters. Calculate the z score for a student who eats breakfast six times per week. Following the same process, calculate the z score for a student who eats breakfast twice a week. How many times a week do you typically eat breakfast? Calculate your own z score.

Explanation / Answer

Formula of z-score is given by,

z = ( x - mean ) / standard devi.

We are given, mean = 4.1, standard deviation = 2.4

a)

z - score for students who eats breakfast 6 times per weak( x = 6)

z- score = ( 6 - 4.1) / 2.4 = 0.791667

b)

z - score for students who eats breakfast 2 times per weak( x = 2 )

z- score = ( 2 - 4.1) / 2.4 = -0.875

c)

Suppose you eats breakfast 5 times per weak.(x = 5 )

z- score = ( 5 - 4.1) / 2.4 = 0.375
