Question

What is the probability of the spinner landing on o 3? _____ What is the probability of the spinner landing on a 1 ? _____ What is the probability of the spinner landing on a 2? _____ Are you more likely to spin an odd number or an even number? Explain What is the probability of the spinner landing on red? _____ What is the probability of the spinner landing on orange? _____ What is the probability of the spinner landing on a primary color? _____ Mike said, "You have a fifty-fifty chance of spinning red." Explain what he means.

Explanation / Answer

1) Probability of landing on a 3 = Total number of sections with 3 / Total number of sections = 1 /6

Therefore 1/6 is the required probability.

2) Probability of landing on a 1 = Total number of sections with 1 / Total number of sections = 2 /6 = 1/3

Therefore 1/3 is the required probability.

3) Probability of landing on a 2 = Total number of sections with 2 / Total number of sections = 1 /6

Therefore 1/6 is the required probability.

4) Number of sections with odd numbers = 3 ( becase 1,1,3 )

Number of sections with even numbers =3( 2,4,4)

Therefore there are 3 sections on the wheel for each even and odd numbers and therefore there is an equal chance of spinning an odd or an even number.

5) Probability of landing on a red = Total number of sections with red / Total number of sections = 2 /4 = 1/2

Therefore 1/2 is the required probability.

6) Probability of landing on a orange = Total number of sections with orange / Total number of sections = 1 /4 = 1/4

Therefore 1/4 is the required probability.

7) Red and blue are primary colours. Therefore number of sections with primary colours = 3 ( red, red and blue )

Probability of landing on a primary colours = Total number of sections with primary colours / Total number of sections = 3 /4 = 3/4
Therefore 3/4 is the required probability.

8) By fifty-fifty chance of spinning red, there is an equal chance of getting a red and a non-red section on the spin . as we saw in Q5.
