Question

In a pulse rate research, a simple random sample of 100 men results in a mean of 80 beats per minute, and a standard deviation of 11 beats per minute. Based on the sample results, the researcher concludes that the pulse rates of men have a standard deviation greater than 10 beats per minutes. Use a 0.05 significance level to test the researcher’s claim.

(a) Identify the null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis.

(b)Determine the test statistic. Show all work; writing the correct test statistic, without supporting work, will receive no credit.

(c) Determine the P-value for this test. Show all work; writing the correct P-value, without supporting work, will receive no credit.

(d) Is there sufficient evidence to support the researcher’s claim? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

We use Chi-sq test here to test varaince (1 sample righ-sided)

background: Variance= SD^2

(a) H0: varaince<=100

Ha: variance>100

observed variance= 121

(b) test stat Chi-sq= (n-1) SD^2/Sigma^2

= 99*121/100 = 119.79 with 99 df

(c) p-value= 0.07

excel formula: "=CHISQ.DIST.RT(119.79,99)"

(d) at 5% level, we cant reject H0. So no enough evidenance to support researcher's claim.
